ISLAMABAD: The Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) on Tuesday organised a northern budgerigar and cockatiel show, with the aim of creating awareness about the birds and removing misconceptions among students and the general public.
The event was organised in collaboration with Northern Budgerigar Cockatiel Club and Department of Wildlife at PMAS-AAUR. PMAS-AAUR Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Rai Niaz Ahmad was the chief guest.
A large number of people, including families, children, faculty members and students visited the show to watch more than 1000 birds on display.
The VC said the birds not only added to the beauty of the environment but also had a positive impact on the mood of the people and made their minds healthy and fresh. He added that Pakistan was a suitable habitat for birds but little attention was paid to taking care of birds. He also appreciated the efforts of the organisers for a wonderful event. Earlier, the chief guest made a round of the show to observe the arrangements of different participants.
Participants of the show provided information to visitors willing to adopt this as a profession and apprised them regarding proper care, handling, nutrition, reproduction, disease control and breed selection.
Bushra Allah Rakha, a lecturer, said that shows like this were a healthy activity and she was pleased to see the variety of birds on display. She added that such activities polished the skills of the students.
A panel comprising of specialists from different universities headed by Kees Bink from the Netherlands judged the show.
